Digicel renews and increases cash support for Special Olympics Samoa

Friday, 27th April 2018 – Apia, Samoa - Digicel has today announced their continued sponsorship of Special Olympics Samoa with a WST$40,000 cheque which was presented at the Digicel Samoa HQ.

Digicel Samoa Chief Executive Officer, Farid Mohammed said, “We are happy to partner with Special Olympics Samoa and support them in their journey towards the 2019 Special Olympics International Games in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Special Olympics is very close to the heart of Digicel Founder and Chairman, Denis O’Brien and we are excited to be able to mirror this in Samoa. Special Olympics Samoa has always been very special to Digicel and together we’ve seen it grow in strength.”

“We are happy to see this partnership promote an inclusive society and most importantly provide a platform to develop and provide opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to realise their potential and strive for excellence for all different abilities.”

SOS will be aiming to improve on its performance in Abu Dhabi next year after winning 13 medals at the 2015 World Games in Los Angeles.

SOS Chairman, Leta’a Daniel Devoe said, “We are happy to ink a new one-year deal and appreciate the continued sponsorship support from Digicel. Over the years, we have worked together to see Samoan athletes receive the best in training, development and participation. We want to thank Digicel for believing in us and most importantly increasing the cash sponsorship, which helps in providing the edge in support, which is invaluable.”     

Three athletes from Special Olympics Samoa will be taking part in the four-day long Fiji International Special Games in Suva against other Pacific island athletes and New Zealand from the 30th April.
