DIGICEL JUMPSTART DISCOVERS YOUNG BASKETBALL TALENT IN CARIBBEAN

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7 2015 – PORT-OF-SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO:  The Digicel Jumpstart Basketball Clinic and Academy program came to a bitter-sweet end on September 28th at the University of the West Indies Sports and Physical Education Centre (UWI SPEC). The result of the program was very impressed NBA coaches and legends with the basketball talent evident not just in Trinidad and Tobago but the other participating Digicel markets as well.

The NBA coaches Troy Justice and William Bayno had a difficult job selecting the 5 young men from the Digicel Jumpstart Clinic to participate in the Elite Academy. It was a sentiment that was shared by the NBA Legends Adonal Foyle; Tyrone Bogues and P J Carlesimo as they joined the coaches for the Elite Academy. NBA veteran Adonal Foyle who is originally from St. Vincent and the Grenadines added some words of encouragement to all the players that participated, “We were indeed tasked with selecting 8 out of the 35 players so be proud of what you have all accomplished. Let the difficulty encourage you to achieve more and never let where you come from be a problem. If I can make it, so can you!”

All participants in the Elite Academy displayed intense concentration, dedication and passion for the sport of basketball both on and off the courts. Their efforts were recognized at the press conference held to mark the end of the Digicel Jumpstart Program. Digicel’s Chief Executive Officer Sacha Thompson attended the final Championship Game and had these words for the promising basketball athletes, “Keep up the hard work with the sport you so obviously love and the day will arrive for you to shine…You are the Basketball Stars of the future.” Thompson also assured the sporting fraternity that Digicel will continue to be advocates for nurturing local sporting talent and thanked the National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago (NBFTT) and the Basketball Coaches Association of Trinidad and Tobago for embarking on the new adventures with Digicel.

Also present was NBFTT President Garvin Warwick who genuinely thanked the successful efforts of Digicel and the NBA Coaches and also commended the dedication and progress of our local coaches. He congratulated every single player involved and left some words of wisdom, “Train hard, play hard, cherish each moment and when the opportunity comes, give it your all and you will be successful. Where there is a will…there is always a way.”

The Digicel Jumpstart Clinic and the Elite Academy provided the way for young men to have an avenue to showcase their skill and talent at a once in a lifetime opportunity for NBA coaches and legends. For 8 of these young men the journey doesn’t stop there but culminates in an NBA New York experience later this year. It was the look of accomplishment on the faces of D’moi Hodge (British Virgin Islands) (BVI), Malachy Payne (BVI), Shadarno Clarke (Turks and Caicos Islands), Yontz Sutton (Bermuda), Mohammed Elias (Trinidad), Remy Brewer (Trinidad), Shakeil Bertrand (Trinidad), Kadeem Greig (Trinidad), that was the greatest reward for all stakeholders of the Digicel Jumpstart program.
