20 NEW SCHOOLS WELCOME ZIPPY’S FRIENDS PROGRAMME
TUESDAY, 6 OCTOBER 2015: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – As a new school year unfolds, Zippy’s Friends, the educational programme sponsored by the Digicel Foundation and implemented by the School Leadership Center, will be landing in 20 new schools across Trinidad and Tobago.
Teachers and principals from the new participating schools, among them- Carenage Boys Government; Tunapuna Hindu SDMS; Las Lomas RC; Londenville Presbyterian; Fifth Company Baptiste; Tabaquite RC, and Roxborough AC and Scarborough RC in Tobago- attended the first of three Zippy’s Teachers Training sessions on Saturday, October 3 at the Marriott Hotel.
Ms. Lisa Vascuna, Principal of one of the new partnering schools, Pepper Village Government, said “I want to thank the Digicel Foundation and the School Leadership Center for bringing this programme to primary schools. It makes me feel so hopeful and encouraged to know that the kits have all the information included and are so easy to use for my teachers.”
She continued, “It’s everything we need to really make a difference and now I want to incorporate the Zippy’s Friends’ Programme not only into Year II’s curriculum but to that of my entire school.”
Zippy’s Friends is an Emotional Literacy Programme which is endorsed by the Ministry of Education and will run for the 3rd year with the aim to equip children aged 5-8 with the necessary skills to better deal with stressful situations that they may encounter on a daily basis.
Over the past two years, the programme, which covers topics such as- Feelings, Communication, Making and Breaking Relationships, Conflict Resolution, Dealing with Change and Loss and Coping- has impacted over 2,000 children and 104 teachers in the 56 primary schools where it was adopted.
