Tuesday, September 29 2015: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – The Digicel Foundation began the first of four ‘Preparing You!’ Disaster Preparedness Teacher Training Workshops on Wednesday September 23.
School Supervisors from the Student Support Services of the Ministry of Education and teachers from the five schools involved in the project were in attendance.
Leading the team from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) was Mrs. Joanna Wilson, Community Outreach Programme Officer, who delivered lectures on Hazard Identification and Analysis, The Role of the State Institutions, The Disaster Management Cycle and Mitigation and Risk Reduction.
In her lecture Ms. Wilson emphasized the importance of being prepared stating that “A hazard becomes a disaster when you don’t prepare”.
Under the direction of the ODPM’s trainers, the teachers began creating comprehensive disaster management and evacuation plans for their schools.
Representing the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services, Fire Prevention Unit, was Fire Officer Blackman who provided tips on Fire Safety and Prevention.
In giving feedback on the benefit of the training, one teacher remarked that “My objective here, today, was to learn how to save the lives of my students and I am satisfied that I have achieved that objective.”
