NBA OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS FOR LOCAL BASKETBALL YOUTHS
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2015 – PORT-OF-SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO: Aspiring basketball athletes and local coaches prepare to take full advantage of the opportunity of a lifetime from September 23- 28. Through the Digicel Jumpstart Programme, 2 NBA coaches and 3 NBA legends will be in Trinidad and Tobago to coach, inspire and develop the sport of basketball.
The Digicel Jumpstart Clinic which takes place from September 23- 25 will feature NBA coaches Troy Justice and William Bayno. They will be joined by 3 NBA legends Tyrone ‘Muggsy’ Bogues; Adonal Foyle and NBA Coach P.J. Carlesimo for the Digicel Elite Camp from September 26-28.
The legends bring with them a wealth of experience in the NBA and are eager to share same with the expectant players and local coaches. NBA veteran Tyrone “Muggsy” Bogues led Dunbar to gain rank as one of the top high school teams in the United States and was selected 12th in the first round of the NBA draft by the Washington Bullets. He retired from the NBA ranking 16th among all-time assist leaders.
Adonal Foyle is a retired veteran NBA player, who was the eighth overall NBA draft pick in 1997, selected by the Golden State Warriors. He is the Warriors’ all-time leading shot-blocker with 1,140 blocks and ranked in the NBA’s top 10 in blocked shots four times between 2001 and 2005. He played a total of 13 NBA seasons, the first ten with the Golden State Warriors and last three with the Orlando Magic.
Also participating in the Digicel Elite Camp, P.J. Carlesimo was most recently the interim head coach of the Brooklyn Nets in the 2012-2013 seasons. The coaching veteran with over 35 years of experience joined the Nets prior to the 2011-12 seasons as an assistant coach.
Digicel, along with the National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago and the Basketball Coaches Association of Trinidad and Tobago have all expressed their excitement on the arrival of these NBA experts and openly welcome all advice and coaching skills to help further develop the basketball fraternity within the Caribbean.
On September 12, 40 basketball youths were selected to undergo vigorous training for the Digicel Jumpstart Clinic. Of that 40, 5 will then be selected to participate in the Elite Camp along with successful participants of the Jumpstart Clinics in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Jamaica and Turks and Caicos Islands.
Following the Elite Camp, 8 young men will then be selected by the NBA coaches to travel to New York facilities where they will be exposed to further training from coaches and players.
