More than 60 staff and their families joined forces in the name of empowering women on Saturday 18 February, as the Digicel WILL committee, Digicel staff and their family and friends walked from Digicel’s headquarters in Gordons to Ela Beach.
Digicel WILL (Women in Leadership League) is a community of 134 female employees within Digicel PNG. It consists of more than 90 members in Port Moresby and over 30 across Alotau, Lae, Madang, Kimbe, Kokopo, Manus and Hagen.
Launched on International Women’s Day in 2016, WILL was introduced in Digicel to provide real opportunities for its female staff across a range of areas.
Digicel WILL aims to empower women and build on their skills to allow women to take on managerial roles, as well as instilling confidence in them to be leaders in their own right.
Each month the Digicel WILL committee hosts an event around a specific topic, and with February focusing on health and fitness, Saturday’s Walkathon was held to remind people about the importance of regular exercise and healthy eating habits.
Digicel Managing Director, Mobile, Shivan Bhargava said he was pleased to see so many people come together to celebrate women’s empowerment at Digicel.
“Digicel is committed to the positive development of women across Papua New Guinea and Digicel WILL is a fantastic initiative our company leads to see real empowerment among our staff and their families,” he said.
“It was wonderful to see so many people participate in the Walkathon to promote healthy living habits and I congratulate the organization on a very successful first event for 2017.”
A sausage sizzle was held at the end of the walk at Ela Beach, to raised funds for upcoming Digicel WILL events.
Other areas of focus for Digicel WILL include women’s issues, health matters, cancer awareness, financial literacy, team building, self-esteem, personal hygiene and grooming.
