DIGICEL’S PACIFIC FAMILY COMES TOGETHER TO HELP FIJI
Friday 26th February, 2016. Aiwo, NAURU: Digicel officially launched a Pacific-wide appeal today, urging its customers throughout the region to “Donate to Fiji” via SMS.
On Saturday 20th February, the Fiji Islands were hit by the Southern Hemisphere’s worst cyclone in recorded history. With winds of over 300km per hour, the category 5 cyclone caused unprecedented devastation and destruction nation-wide. The Prime Minister’s Relief Fund has been set up to support teams of people now working around the clock to provide food, water, shelter and other basic necessities to the most vulnerable communities in Fiji. And all monies raised by Digicel’s #TogetherForFiji will go towards these efforts.
Promoted primarily on social media, the telecommunications provider is urging customers throughout the Pacific to come together for Fiji; to show their support for their wider Pacific family with a small but heart-felt donation. Digicel customers across the region can instantly donate by texting into the short code 9222. In Samoa donations are 1 Tala, 1 Pa’anga in Tonga, 100 Vatu in Vanuatu, 1 Kina in Papua New Guinea and 1 dollar in Nauru.
Digicel Asia Pacific CEO, Michael Murphy said, “The scale of devastation is significant and there is a real need for assistance and funding now, to help the people of Fiji get back on their feet as soon as possible.”
“Many houses were literally flattened and many families have lost everything,” he added. “If all of our customers across the Pacific were able to donate a little, we could, in theory, raise a substantial amount. One dollar doesn’t buy you much these days, but together - all those dollars stand to make a massive difference.”
