A 10 a.m. appointment for an exclusive VIP shopping, spa and dining experience, turned into a surprise $10 million ‘Digicel Shake to Win’ Christmas promotion grand prize win for longstanding customer, Anthony White.
The 53-year-old funeral home gate attendant was initially overcome with surprise and amazement when he learnt that the VIP-for-a-day treatment was all part of a lead-up to the grand announcement on the lawns of the Digicel headquarters in downtown Kingston on Monday afternoon.
Earlier that day, White and his son, Richard, were chauffeured in a shiny new Audi Q7 sport utility vehicle - courtesy of ATL Autohaus - to a shopping experience at Male Ego in Southdale Plaza, spa treatment at Adam & Eve Day Spa in New Kingston, and lunch at the trendy F&B restaurant in Downtown Kingston. White was then told that his next stop would be at the Digicel headquarters where CEO Allison Philbert was waiting to personally thank him for being a loyal Digicel customer since 2001.
It was upon arrival and meeting Philbert, that White and his son also noticed a giant gift box nearby, a crew of cameramen, social media influencers and staff members coming towards them. Before he even had time to think, a section of the gift box flung open. From it emerged the bubbly and energetic Digicel brand ambassador and radio personality, Miss Kitty, who launched into announcing that White had won the $10 million grand prize.
Astonished by the life-changing event, White covered his face with both hands in disbelief and muttered “Wow”. His son, Richard, cried tears of joy while he reflected on the goodness of his hardworking dad and how well-deserving he was of the mega cash prize. The win served as a much-needed turning point for the family which only days before were the victims of an ATM robbery that deprived them of their spending money for Christmas.
After receiving the symbolic oversized cheque from CEO Philbert, White announced plans leave his current job, invest the funds in a business and towards assisting his family members. White disclosed, “Just mi grandkids right now I’m thinking about setting up an education fund for them.” He continued, “Mi a go buy a little car and start a business in the meantime. I want to say a big ‘thank you’ to Digicel, because I never switched (from Digicel) and will never switch.”
Beaming with delight, Philbert commented, “The entire Digicel team is so happy for Mr. White and we are excited to know that we have made a positive difference in his life and that of his family members.” She added, “At its core, our Shake to Win promotion is about sharing more with our customers this Christmas. And that look of pure joy on Mr White and his son’s face when the prize win was announced is exactly what this is all about.”
Prior to being randomly drawn as the grand prize winner in the Digicel Shake to Win Christmas promotion, White had downloaded the new MyDigicel app, topped up his Prepaid service and purchased data plans during the first six weeks of the promotion. Throughout the promotion he tapped on the MyDigicel app to shake his phone and occasionally won free data and phone credit.
