Elite Camp in Trinidad & Tobago next stop as they get ready to face picks from across the region

MONDAY, MAY 7, 2018 – KINGSTON JAMAICA: Seven of seventy-five male and female basketballers who showed up at the National Arena on the weekend successfully impressed visiting National Basketball Association (NBA) coaches that they have what it takes to move to the next level in the 2018 Digicel NBA Jumpstart Series.

After a frank and inspiring pep talk with coach, Bob MacKinnon Jr, head of the US-based Texas Legends basketball team; Daniel Soares, NBA Director of Basketball Operations – Latin America, and Idia Ogala who leads the NBA’s marketing partnerships in Latin America, the group of Under-14 and Under-16 hoopsters began an intense two days of technical drills designed for each player to showcase their talent and take them another step closer to being selected.

Coach MacKinnon lead the players through a variety of activities on and off the court, including individual player development, 5-on-5 games, life skills education, offensive improvement, shooting, dribbling and more. The eager pro basketball hopefuls gave it their all and demonstrated a high level of interest, determination and skill.

At the end of the action-packed weekend, Aaliyah Powell and Britney Mitchell, both from the Holy Childhood High School, from the Under-16 girls’ category booked their places to the Elite Camp in Trinidad and Tobago from July 14-15.

The five Under-16 boys who dribbled their way to selection were, Anthony Thorpe of Herbert Morrison High School, Kyle Ottar of Wolmer’s Boys School, Lloyd Price of Ardenne High, Kevon Gayle of St. George’s College, and Denroy Watson who attends Camperdown High School.

“The kids really competed hard and they played hard,” remarked Coach MacKinnon. He continued, “I think each one of them came in every day trying to get better, the experience was just tremendous.  Digicel did a great job at organising the camp, I would love to be back to do this again.”

Tari Lovell, Group Sponsorship Manager for Digicel commented, “The participants were fully engaged this weekend.  They showed up, gave it their best, especially with the drills and the 5-on-5 games. They have certainly made all of us very proud. I would like to congratulate the top seven players, all participants, their parents, coaches and supporters for making this weekend an exciting one.”

Seven Under-14 players also received ‘All Star’ commendations for their exceptional effort in the 2-day camp.
