Wednesday, August 22, 2018 - Kingston, Jamaica: Digicel has announced a number of firsts for the 2018 Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) football season as the competition gets set to kick off on September 8.

Shortly after announcing the newly renamed Digicel Manning Cup and Digicel Walker Cup competitions at a launch at the Terra Nova Hotel in St. Andrew today, CEO of Digicel Jamaica, Justin Morin, reeled off a string of exciting initiatives involving teams and spectators throughout the season.

He announced Digicel’s newly-appointed Programme Ambassador for the secondary level competition, former national and English Premier League player, Ricardo Fuller.

Working with ISSA’s #ISSArealGOAL campaign, Fuller will provide leadership training and professional mentorship to select Manning Cup teams through a series of clinics. This will involve guiding the young, aspiring ballers on how to make it into the professional leagues after they’ve transitioned from the schoolboy football programme.



Morin commented, “Fuller’s impressive record also includes a total of 120 goals while playing for overseas clubs. He’s therefore a great example for the young players to learn important life lessons.“

Also new this year will be the Digicel All Star 11 – Fuller’s top picks from the Manning Cup who will receive special recognition for their outstanding performance throughout the competition.

This year also marks the unveiling of a newly-designed trophy for the Digicel Manning Cup competition. And to give everyone an opportunity to see it, Digicel will be launching a trophy tour - making stops at Digicel stores and pep rallies at Corporate Area schools. According to Morin, “This will certainly add motivation to the teams and remind everyone of the glory of being crowned Manning Cup champion.”

Not leaving out the die-hearted fans of schoolboy football, Morin also announced that - for the very first time - every Digicel customer will be able to subscribe and watch the matches live on the SportsMax channel via the PlayGo streaming app. Viewers can also get match stats and updates from other content providers like www.schoolboyfootball.com, LOOP and Digicel’s social media pages.


Digicel promises to bring a new level of energy, fun and excitement to entertainment at the matches to include ‘Fan View’ videos for social media involving spectators, and also lots of on-the-spot surprises for the fans.

To help make everything happen, Digicel is investing J$75 million dollars in the ISSA Schoolboy Football Programme over the next 3 years, as a symbol of its continuing contribution to youth sports development in Jamaica.

“Supporting schoolboy football is very important to all of us at Digicel, because we see it as a major investment in the future of some of Jamaica’s most talented young athletes,” Morin concluded.
