Local Talent Powers Digicel Play
Jamaicans account for majority of one thousand new jobs
Kingston, Jamaica – Tuesday, January 12, 2016: Technically-skilled and service-oriented persons account for the largest group of almost one thousand persons hired to roll out Digicel Play.
Digicel Play is Jamaica’s first true Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) entertainment and communications product. It is feature-rich, with ultra-fast Internet speeds, High Definition TV and superior digital voice telephone service.
The fresh cohort of skilled workers has been largely responsible for the rapid deployment of the ‘triple play’ services to consumers in Kingston over the past six months. The teams are now expanding into other parts of the country.
Digicel Human Resources Director, Andrea Hardware is pleased that the vast majority of workers represent local talent. She remarked, “This aligns with our talent strategy to always attract the right mix of high-skilled and educated Jamaicans who we have found to be among the world’s best at deploying complex networks like mobile and now FTTH”.
The list of local talent includes: IPTV Engineers, Geographic Information Systems Engineers, Fibre Engineers and Technicians, Network Designers, Technical & Business Analysts, Service Delivery and Customer Care agents. Other Jamaicans have also been hired to conduct logistics, training, marketing, social media management and IT-related work.
Among the group is installation technician, Rohan Yee. He sees a world where advancements in technology have opened up an employment opportunity for him at Digicel Play. Yee remarked, “The job has been great so far. I am particularly excited about working with the latest technology in telecommunications-fibre and with the on-the-job training I received I am not only able to do my current job but it has also positioned me for future endeavours in my career development”.
For this, Hardware commends the work of the various tech-skills training institutions that continue to provide companies like Digicel with talent of the highest standard.
She concluded, “Digicel sees technology as a catalyst for job-creation from the developer to end-user standpoint. We will continue to build our workforce with highly skilled and educated people who provide us with our real competitive advantage in delivering an innovative communication and entertainment experience to customers”.
