With thousands of Jamaicans trying to outdo each other in the quest for $1 million dollars, Digicel’s ‘25 Days of Christmas Challenge’ has become the hottest trend in social media, locally. Over 10,000 persons registered within the first ten days after launch on December 1. The competition has now attracted close to 15,000 active participants.
The first social media-based competition of its kind locally, the Challenge allows one lucky person to spend the New Year $1 million dollars richer. To qualify, persons sign up for free and complete up to three daily challenges to earn points. At the end of the 25 days, the points will be tallied and the person with the most points will become Jamaica’s first #SocialMillionaire.
On Instagram, @keniesha.brown shared some of her plans for how she would use the $1 million dollar prize, saying, “I would use it to assist my 10 year old son in publishing his first book. Pay on some debts and the difference would go towards either tuition fees for myself and husband or deposit on our first house.”
From creating a Reggae version of the Christmas Carol, ‘Silent Night’ to dressing up a pet as a reindeer, the participants have creatively interpreted the challenges, uploading a variety of content and generating thousands of shares across the social media platforms, namely Facebook and Instagram.
@88_dedra shared, “Lol, I love these challenges, I know I might not come out on top but the challenges are fun.” Similarly, Nicholas Tour on Facebook said, “This is so cool! Digicel is giving away one million dollars for the Christmas... Jamaica’s bigger better network... Hope I will be the winner... I have been a Digicel customer for more than ten years and still am a customer...”
Delighted with the response from the participants, Director of Marketing at Digicel, Peter Lloyd said, “Social Media has always been a key ingredient in how we keep customers happy and engaged. So we’ve done everything to ensure they get the best online experience with our island-wide 4G network that delivers fun activities such as this. This Christmas Challenge was specifically designed to engage our customers with something new and exciting, while giving them a chance to show their creative side and, of course, win great prizes.”
He added, “From the posts we’ve seen so far, we know persons have been enjoying the challenges. It’s been quite exciting and we can’t wait to see who will become Jamaica’s first Social Millionaire.”
There’s still time for more persons to join in on the action and Digicel is encouraging everyone to sign up at www.socialmillionaireja.com.Over 5,500 daily and weekly prizes will be awarded throughout the period and the winner of the $1M cash prize will be announced on Monday, December 28.
