Ashley-Gaye Douglas, who graduates from Port Antonio High School next month just can’t wait to be calling and texting on her new Blackberry Q10—a graduation gift from her big sister, Rockell Douglas. Rockell won the phone as first prize in Digicel’s “Give Us Your Ten Words and Win” social media promotion.
Overwhelmed, Ashley-Gaye could not hold back her delight at her sister’s gesture.
“I am excited but also a bit shocked that my sister would be giving me her prize! I mean, how many persons would give away the latest Blackberry?”
Big sister Rockell explained that Ashley-Gaye was the motivation for her entering the competition.
“When I graduated from high school, I didn’t get anything. I wanted to get my sister something to show her that I support her and I am proud of her for reaching this far. For the longest time now she has been asking for a phone and that is what I wanted to get for her.”
Rockell then shared how disappointed she was when after shopping around for a nice phone for Ashley-Gaye, she couldn’t afford the prices.
“I was diagnosed with cancer in January and since then all my funds have been directed towards medication and treatment so I couldn’t really afford to get my sister the kind of gift I wanted to get her. So I took a chance and entered Digicel’s “Give Us Your Ten” competition on Facebook.”
The promotion asked Digicel’s Facebook fans to state in ten words why they should be the winner of the new Blackberry Q10. Rockell’s entry “SleePING, SweePING, LeaPING, never a moment without my Digicel Blackberry” was selected from over 1000 entries.
In spite of her circumstances, Rockell has been involved in a number of initiatives geared at helping others. As part of a group called the “Halo Society”, Rockell and her friends from high school have started a project to help persons in their Port Antonio community with basic care items such as rubbing alcohol and other toiletries.
Shelly-Ann Harris, senior communications manager at Digicel commended Douglas for epitomizing what it means to “Be Extraordinary.”
“Rockell is a true example of an extraordinary person. In spite of her own challenges, she is committed to giving back to her family and community, which is the foundation of the Digicel experience. What makes this even better is that Rockell has taken her special moment of winning the Q10and turned it into something extraordinary for someone else, her sister. Now how selfless is that?”
