Kingston, Jamaica, Wednesday, December 5, 2012: Digicel Jamaica will be sponsoring a new Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) Special Award for Excellence in Technology reporting with a focus on Information Communication Technology (ICT). The new award is designed to encourage increased reporting on ICT to include cloud computing, mobile technology, telecommunications, related innovations and their impact on the Jamaican society. The best news and feature stories in both print and electronic categories will be selected for this extraordinary award near the end of 2013.
Commenting on the announcement, Shelly-Ann Harris, Digicel’s Senior Communications Manager noted that “technology is the highway to the future. Regular day-to-day personal and business tasks are now undertaken with the help of ever changing and ever improving technology. That is why it is very important for us to increase awareness and foster understanding around the relevant trends so that our youth can be inspired about the immense possibilities for business development and innovation that exist in Jamaica and the world.”
Continuing, Harris emphasized that in addition to the current sponsorship of the award for Online Journalism, “Digicel is very excited to be sponsoring another groundbreaking PAJ award that we know will spark the requisite interest and awareness about the exciting ICT sector and result in the expansion of industry and entrepreneurship in our country. We look forward to a year of increased coverage about ICT and the sparking of new ideas,” Harris said.
Entries for the Special Award for Excellence in Technology reporting should among other things raise general or specific awareness about ICT; be written or produced with clarity to allow ease of understanding; have significant impact on society; enable knowledge building on ICT and highlight new trends.
In addition to cash prizes, recipients of this inaugural special award will receive the latest high-end Digicel consumer device of their choice.
