Digicel’s partnership with the Government of Jamaica was announcement by Minister with responsibility for Sports, Honorable Natalie Neita-Headlely, during a press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister on Wednesday, October 3, 2012.
Tahnida Nunes, Sponsorship Manager for Digicel Jamaica, said: “To us at Digicel, our athletes’ performances at the recent Olympic and Paralympic Games were beyond extraordinary. For the entire period of the Games, Jamaica was prominently placed on the world stage and national pride was at an all-time high, particularly in a year when - Jamaica is celebrating 50 years of amazing achievements and extraordinary experiences. Digicel is therefore very happy to be partnering with the Government to host these activities to say thank you to our athletes and officials and to show them how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication”.
Spearheaded by the Government, the homecoming celebration for the athletes was conceived by a multi-sectoral planning committee comprising of members of both the public and private sectors.
The activities are scheduled to kick off with a church service at East Queen Street Baptist Church, and later an evening reception with the Prime Minister on Sunday 14th October, and will culminate on Monday 15th October with a public event and concert under the theme, “Jamaica’s Musical History Honouring our Olympic Journey” at the National Arena.
Additionally - and as a symbolic gesture - the Government of Jamaica will also be laying a floral tribute and unveiling a headstone for the Honourable Herbert McKenley at the National Heroes Park. This will immediately follow the annual wreath laying ceremony for National Heroes.
