Fallon Phillips of Team Pop, singing ‘Who You Are’ by Jessie J, brought the studio audience to their feet, complete with a rousing round of applause. Her performance also got excellent reviews from the mentors.
Conroy Wilson, the pop genre mentor, expressed his satisfaction with the performance and simply said “she is popping”. Conroy also expressed not liking Phillips at first when she came to audition but when she started singing he was overcome by her talent and had to have her on his team.
Team R&B/Soul also represented well with Christine Bromley’s rendition of Keisha White’s ‘The Weakness In Me’. Bromley was described by her mentor, D Major as a precision singer with an excellent voice. Her performance also got the audience in a tizzy and was said to be a wonderful, passionate and expressive performance by the mentors.
All the mentors seemed pleased with their protégés performance on the first show. Carlene Davis said “with God all things are possible and team Gospel did very well at our first showing. I am encouraged as a mentor by the performance tonight.”
The show came to a very energetic end with a special guest performance by none other than gospel sensation DJ Nicholas who had the audience on their feet dancing to hits like ‘Cut it Off’ and ‘Holy Ghost Gym’.
