Clinics Coached by England & Liverpool Football Legend, John Barnes
Digicel today officially launched the final leg of the Digicel Kick Start Clinics 2012 at a press conference featuring Head Coach and England and Liverpool football legend, John Barnes, at the Barbican Beach Football Field in Kingston.
Thirty of Jamaica’s young aspiring footballers were selected by the Inter Secondary Schools Association (ISSA) to participate in the two-day clinics which will give the boys first-hand practical experience along with technical guidance from the coaches present.
Speaking at the press conference, John Barnes said he was really looking forward to being here in Jamaica and wrapping up the clinics. “After three weeks traveling across the Caribbean and Central America, I was really looking forward to coming home. I was brought up here and moved to England when I was 13. Back then, opportunities didn’t present themselves as they do nowadays. I was fortunate enough to have been spotted playing in a park, but you guys have opportunities all the time, and the Digicel Kick Start Clinics is one of them.”
He continued, “To be successful, it’s not about what you do over the next two days with me - or if you get chosen - how you perform with the Chelsea coaches in Barbados, it’s about what you do 52 weeks of the year. It’s about your commitment, dedication and attitude to improving your game.”
In the meantime, Head Coach of the Reggae Boyz Under 17’s, Vinimore Blain said, “I would like to commend Digicel for once again hosting the Digicel Kickstart Clinics. It is great to have them back at the helm. This is an extension of the Digicel Jamaica grassroots programme which runs right across the island and which has been a great success. To all the boys here today, I wish you all the best over the next two days.”
The Digicel Kick Start Clinics promise to serve up a number of opportunities for the boys that are participating. Following the two-day clinic, Barnes will then select the top three players who will each win a place in the Digicel Academy, a week-long elite training camp in Barbados under the leadership of top Chelsea FC coaches from the Chelsea FC Foundation. With this significant relationship with Chelsea FC – Europe’s best team – Digicel is further demonstrating its commitment to the ongoing development of grassroots football across the Caribbean and Central America.
Sponsorship Manager at Digicel Jamaica, Tahnida Nunes, commenting at the press conference said, “Digicel Kickstart Clinics is a great way to kick off the football fever in Jamaica with Schoolboy Football just around the corner. We’re confident that these youngsters will learn a great deal from John and the coaching staff”. Nunes also wished the three boys who will be selected at the end of the Clinics to represent Jamaica in Barbados, best of luck.
The Digicel Kick Start Clinics programme officially kicked off on July 27th in Miami before travelling on to Haiti, Panama, St. Kitts & Nevis, Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Lucia and now Jamaica. For more information, visit www.digicelfootball.com
