Sunday night saw Jamaicans tuning into Digicel Stars as the talent show showcased the second set of contestants vying for the opportunity to be the Digicel Star.
The talents were Dane ‘Smooth’ Williams for Team R&B/Soul, Richard ‘Richie Bless’ Francis representing Team Gospel, Damion ‘DSL’ Lewis for Team Jamaican Sound and Sherona Jonas for the team that is currently ahead on the show, Team Pop.
Williams brought the house down with his ‘smooth’ performance of Luther Vandross’ Always & Forever going all out out with his performance and even melting the heart of one lucky audience member when he sang specially for her when she came onstage. All the mentors agreed that Williams had excellent stage presence, a very captivating voice and made the song all his own, while R&B/Soul mentor D Major simply said “that performance was wicked”.
The second performer for the night represented the pop genre, and Jonas came with her bubbly personality and a never to be forgotten performance of Beyonce’s Love on Top. Not the typical diva, Jonas held the audience from start to finish with her great voice and even greater performance skills. The audience was clapping to the beat and gave her a rousing round of applause at the end of her performance. Derrick Coffie, mentor for Jamaican Sound genre, said “I felt like I was sitting next to Beyonce.” D-Major described her as “fluffy with confidence” and Carlene Davis, the gospel genre mentor, encouraged her to keep going as she is very talented.
In representing for the Jamaican Sound genre, Lewis performed a well received version of Dennis Brown’s You Don’t Know What It Means to Be Loved and the gospel genres’ Francis got a very good audience response for his rendition of You Raised Me Up.
Dancehall star Chino was the night’s special guest performer and got the audience rocking to his recently released tunes If Mi Rich Tomorrow and the quickly catching on Miss Universe.
The mentors were excited about their second showing on the series. Conroy Wilson, the pop genre mentor, said “Team Pop has stolen the show, we won last week and this week we have most definitely set the standard”.
