Monday, December 15th 2014 - Georgetown, Guyana: Digicel Guyana today announced that it has partnered with the Wikimedia Foundation to offer its customers unlimited access to the information platform, Wikipedia. Mobile users will be able to have this educational tool at the tip of their fingertips whenever they need information. “The great thing about this is that it is absolutely free, it will cost you zero dollars to use, hence the name ‘Wikipedia zero’ Head of Marketing, Jacqueline James.
This online encyclopaedia offers a host of information that is relevant to almost all categories of job profiles and students. With nearly 400 million subscribers worldwide Digicel’s agreement with the Wikimedia Foundation is significant. This is one step closer to achieving access to information for all, getting closer to a world where each and every single human being and an equal chance of access to information is the goal.
Once a mobile user on Digicel’s network accesses the information site, Wikipedia recgonizes the network and you will see a Digicel banner which will indicate free data courtesy. Wikipedia Zero itself is not a separate product from the core Wikipedia mobile site. An original version of the Wikipedia Zero program zero-rated free access to a lightweight, text-only version (located at zero.wikipedia.org) of the Wikipedia mobile site. While several existing partners still offer this version of the program, it will be phased out in favor of the full version.
