Digicel Supports Special Olympics Fiji

Thursday, 25th April 2018 – Suva, Fiji - Digicel has today announced their continued support of Special Olympics Fiji with an $8,000 cash sponsorship for the Fiji Invitational Regional Games to be held in Suva next week.

Digicel Fiji Chief Executive Officer, Mike Greig said, “This is a great day for a great cause, and we are fully committed to the community where we operate. We are delighted to partner with Special Olympics Fiji to support them in their 50th year celebrations and the hosting of the Fiji Invitational Regional Games. Special Olympics is a passion of Digicel Founder and Chairman, Denis O’Brien and we are excited to be able to mirror this in Fiji. Special Olympics Fiji has always been very special to Digicel and we continue our partnership after the success of the 2016 National Games in Suva.”

Special Olympics Fiji will host athletes from Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Nauru, Kiribati including around 300 Fijians from various local districts and special institutions.

Special Olympics Fiji Chairman, Bishwa Sidal said, “We are happy to receive this support and appreciate the continued sponsorship from Digicel. Over the years, we have worked together to see Fijian athletes receive the best in training, development and participation. We want to thank Digicel for believing in us and most importantly coming forth to support the Invitational Regional Games.”     

“Athletes will compete in Athletics, Swimming, Table Tennis, Football and Netball in the four-day games. We are anticipating some tough competition from our Pacific athletes as we build towards the 2019 Special Olympics International Games in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.”

The Special Olympics Fiji Invitational Regional Games opening ceremony will be held at the Jai Narayan College next Monday afternoon while the closing ceremony will be next Thursday at the Fiji FA hall in Vatuwaqa.
