June 21st 2016 - NRL and Digicel team up to empower the Pacific
Tuesday June 21st 2016: The National Rugby League and international communications and entertainment company Digicel have announced a three-year partnership to support and educate Rugby League fans throughout the Pacific.
The partnership includes three priorities:
- NRL Pacific Outreach program: educating youth and women across the Pacific with a focus on achieving real social change
- Sponsorship of the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII tours
- Introduction of a ‘Pacific Warrior’ program to uncover Rugby League talent throughout the Pacific
More than 200,000 students and 1,000 teachers across 100 schools throughout PNG, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga will benefit from the agreement, with the NRL implementing tailored educational resources and health and awareness programs. These programs will continue to build upon the success of those already established in partnership with the Australian and PNG Governments.
NRL Chief Commercial Officer Michael Brown said the partnership would ensure that Rugby League would continue to grow and prosper throughout the Pacific.
“Rugby League has an incredible following throughout the Pacific and the NRL has been very fortunate to benefit from many talented players from the region for many years,” Mr Brown said.
“Not only will our partnership with Digicel ensure that more fans throughout the Pacific will have a chance to connect with Rugby League, but importantly, we will ensure that more school students and women are educated on positive health and wellbeing.”
Digicel Fiji CEO, Darren McLean said we’re delighted to partner with the NRL for this great initiative.
“Rugby League is a well-loved sport in Fiji and the Pacific, Fijians follow the game with passion on Sky Pacific especially with stars like Semi Radradra, Akuila Uate and many other national reps who play in the NRL.”
“This partnership with the NRL will provide opportunities to young children to develop the skills required to play the game. The NRL Pacific Outreach program will offer young children in Fiji a pathway which will prepare them to chase their dreams of playing in the professional NRL.”
