DIGICEL VICTORIOUS AT WORLD COMMUNICATIONS AWARDS
Digicel Papua New Guinea scoops award for Best Operator in an Emerging Market
Digicel’s name was up in lights as it took home the award for Best Operator in an Emerging Market for its work in Papua New Guinea (PNG) at the World Communications Awards unveiled in London last night, beating out strong competition from GlobeNet, SatADSL, Smart Communications and Reliance Jio.
Overall, Digicel was shortlisted four times across three categories and was pitted against the leading lights of the global communications industry at the 21st staging of the prestigious awards with recognition for Digicel Dominica CEO, Nikima Royer Jno Baptiste, who was shortlisted in the Women in Telecoms category for her phenomenal work and leadership in the aftermath of the devastating category five Hurricane Maria which ravaged the island of Dominica in 2017 and the Social Contribution category seeing two Digicel shortlistings both for its groundbreaking Mon Cash mobile money programme in Haiti and its education project work through the Digicel Foundation in Papua New Guinea.
Papua New Guinea is an especially challenging environment. Spread over 465,000 kilometres and 600 islands of mountainous terrain with over 850 languages, weak infrastructure developments like roads, fibre and power rank it 156 out of 187 countries on the Human Development Index with 40% of the population live on less than US$1.25 per day. With penetration at around 35% - low by global standards - Digicel is uniquely placed to drive further uptake thanks to its 80% population coverage.
In celebrating the award win, Digicel Group CEO, Jean-Yves Charlier, said; “The work we do across the globe to bring the benefits of digital connectivity to as many people as possible is truly transformational – and that is particularly true in terms of Papua New Guinea. As a uniquely challenging market, we are working to bridge the digital divide in PNG and to help create a world where no one gets left behind. I couldn’t be prouder of the PNG team - and indeed all of my colleagues in the Digicel family across the world – for what they are able to deliver to our customers in even the toughest environments.”
