Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – Friday, July 27, 2018:  Digicel and the National Basketball Association (NBA) hosted New Orleans Pelicans Head Coach, Alvin Gentry at the Digicel NBA Jumpstart Elite Camp held in Trinidad and Tobago from July 21-22.

The Elite Camp featured the top 42 players – 30 boys and 12 girls – from the Digicel NBA Jumpstart Clinics held across six Caribbean countries. Throughout the elite camp, all players were on top of their game hoping to be selected by Digicel and the NBA to participate in an authentic NBA experience later this year. Fourteen players were selected, representing: Antigua, St. Kitts and Nevis, Jamaica, Barbados, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago. Team Trinidad and Tobago, goes off the NBA Experience with four winners:  Nikiya Baptiste, Breanna Charles, Nickolai Mills and Jelani Blackett.

“We gathered the best youth basketballers in the region and brought them together to learn from NBA coaches and staff as well as from each other. Their hard work, dedication and positive attitude brought them this far and at the camp they forged friendships and connections that will stand them in good stead for the rest of their life.” said Tari Lovell, Group Sponsorship Manager for Digicel.  “We’re proud of all those who participated along the way, but especially the seven boys and seven girls who were selected for the NBA experience later this year.”

The Digicel NBA Jumpstart Basketball programme, started in 2015, launched its 2018 series in the Turks and Caicos Islands on April 8 before heading across the Caribbean stopping in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Jamaica, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago. These national clinics, run by NBA assistant coaches along with NBA International Basketball Operations staff, brought together hundreds of players and coaches in each country. Each clinic provided training for the top boys and girls in each country as well as coaching clinics for local coaches.

Coverage from the Digicel NBA Jumpstart Basketball Camps is available to view across Digicel’s social media platforms and on SportsMax. Digicel and the NBA signed a multiyear partnership in 2015 to deliver live games and extensive NBA programming to more than 25 Caribbean territories through SportsMax and the PlayGo app – making Digicel the Official Communications Partner of the NBA in the region.

The 2018-19 NBA season starts in October 2018.
