DIGICEL KICK START PLAYERS SET FOR A TRIP OF A LIFETIME TO MANCHESTER CITY FC’S TRAINING GROUND
- Six Caribbean players head to the City Football Academy in Manchester
Monday 4th January 2016 – Kingston, Jamaica: The Digicel Kick Start programme is giving aspiring young footballers the opportunity of a lifetime to fly to England where they will visit Manchester City Football Club and their home ground, the Etihad Stadium. Whilst there, they will train with and learn from some of the best players and coaches in the world at the Club’s elite training and youth development facility, the City Football Academy.
The Digicel Kick Start Clinics and Academy provide a way for young footballers to improve and hone their footballing skills and talents, while building character both on and off the pitch. The Academy, which was held at Sabina Park in Jamaica last October, brought together the top 30 boys from across the Caribbean to receive world class training from City Football Schools’ coaches – with the top six boys from the Academy now embarking on another journey – a week long visit to Manchester City to train with the best in their age group.
The footballers selected are among the best the Caribbean has to offer and were hand-picked by Manchester City coaches – but what’s truly special about the programme is that it gives young men the opportunity to get better in all facets of life and demonstrates what results from hard work and determination. The six players jetting off to Manchester are Akeem Robotham, Alain Skerritt and Maliek Howell from Jamaica and Elihaj Shade, Jon Paul Rochford and Tyrell Emmanuel from Trinidad and Tobago.
The boys will not only get to train with some of the best coaches in the world, but will also tour the Etihad Stadium, the third-largest stadium in the Premier League, and attend one of the best fixtures in the Barclays Premier League - Manchester City versus Everton.
This entire experience will be captured by Digicel SportsMax and shared via 30-minute programmes on the channel. Other highlights from the experience will be shared online across various social media platforms with 15 and 30 second clips and on mobile devices via the LOOP News app.
Group Commercial Director of City Football Marketing, Omar Berrada, said; “Everyone at Manchester City and New York City FC is excited to be involved in this partnership, which is changing the lives of many young footballers across the Caribbean region. Ensuring young people have the opportunity to achieve their goals on and off the pitch is a key objective for the Club and knowing Digicel share our commitment to youth development makes them an ideal partner. The Kick Start programme is key to developing football across the Caribbean and we all hope the participants have an unforgettable experience whilst at the City Football Academy.”
Digicel Group Marketing Operations Director, Kieran Foley, said; “We are delighted these young footballers are getting the opportunity to visit one of the most prestigious football clubs in Europe. This platform will give the footballers a lot of exposure and we will deliver special content through broadcast, digital and mobile channels and exciting experiences and promotions for all our customers to get involved in.”
The Kick Start programme has been a huge success and has generated support from football fans across the Caribbean and beyond. From the five-day long Academy, each video posted on the various social media platforms received approximately 4,400 views and reached over 19,000 people to go with the thousands of additional followers – which goes to show the increased interest and support, both locally and internationally, sparked by online and mobile promotions.
