DIGICEL SPORTSMAX AND NBA HOST JUMPSTART CLINICS IN JAMAICA

- Over 60 Jamaica Youth Basketball Players to be trained by  NBA Coaches

Thursday 3rd September 2015 – Kingston, Jamaica: Digicel SportsMax and the National Basketball Association (NBA) will be hosting the Digicel Jumpstart Clinics this Saturday and Sunday at the National Indoor Sports Centre.

The Clinics will be run by NBA International Basketball Operations staff and focus on player development, bringing together 40 players from the national U16 team along with 40 local coaches from the Jamaica Basketball Association (JABA). During the two-day Clinic, players will be put through their paces by the NBA coaches who will share their knowledge and expertise and take their game to the next level. Through the Clinics, the players are not only taught about skill and technical ability but also an ethos of professionalism and a good attitude – critical attributes of successful people in all walks of life.

President of the Jamaica Basketball Association, Dr Mark Broomfield, said; “Under a rejuvenated JABA, our national mandate includes a keen focus on youth development. The Digicel Jumpstart Clinics programme instils a solid platform for 40 local coaches, and 40 talented national Under-16 basketballers, which will help them in upcoming regional tournaments. We are pleased that their skills will be showcased in Jamaica and 25 other countries on Digicel SportsMax.”

“Our partnership with the NBA brings immense opportunities for us not just to broadcast the league which tips off on 27th October, but to ensure that our basketball fans and players benefit from our association throughout the Caribbean. The Digicel Jumpstart Clinics, led by the NBA coaches, will teach aspiring young players valuable lessons that are useful both on and off the court as well as core basketball values necessary for a solid foundation in the sport,” said Tanya Lee, Caribbean Marketing Manager for Digicel SportsMax.

The Jamaica leg of the Jumpstart Basketball Clinic is a part of the Digicel Jumpstart Clinics initiative being held across the Caribbean with camps having been held in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos and culminating in Trinidad and Tobago.

The best athletes in each country will be selected for the intensive “Elite Camp” programme September 26-28 in Trinidad and Tobago where former NBA player Mugsy Bogues and former NBA coach PJ Carlesimo are scheduled to appear. The top eight players from the Elite Camp as determined by the NBA coaches and legends will have the opportunity to travel to the United States to participate in training sessions with an NBA team, and being part of an exclusive NBA experience with the team as well as attend an official NBA game.
