Tuesday 25th February 2014 – Bridgetown, Barbados: Mix 96.9 FM is one of Barbados’ top radio stations. Launched in 2001, Mix FM employs ten vibrant staff who “play today’s best music hits” – a selection of popular international, regional and local music. Mix 96.9FM broadcasts over the airwaves by passing a feed from a transmitter site in St. Joseph to Mix’s ultra-modern studio in Sheraton Mall; in essence the transmission of this feed is critical to the functioning of the station to ensure that listeners can tune into the broadcast.

The Challenge

Mix was totally let down by the poor quality of service it was receiving from its internet provider.  While the radio station suffered months of outages, down time and dead air, which frustrated listeners, it continued to work with its provider to solve the problem; however the issues escalated to the point where the signal was completely lost. With dead air being a nightmare scenario for any broadcast outlet, Mix was effectively shut down.

Scott Weatherhead, owner of Mix recalled; “Our connection between the studio and the transmitter went down completely. At one point, I had to go to the radio tower with my laptop and transmit the music directly from there; this was definitely not the ideal situation.”

Out of an abundance of frustration, Scott reached out to Digicel Barbados CFO, Ciaran Burke, who then referred him to Digicel’s Head of Business Solutions. When Scott explained the problem to the Digicel Business team, it was unsure of the capabilities given Digicel had never installed a WiMAX solution in that part of the island before. Despite initial apprehension, Digicel Business sent a team to visit the site two hours later to conduct a site survey and run the relevant tests; if it worked they could get the other end installed later that day or early the next day.

The Solution

The tailored solution recommended was a dedicated circuit between the studio and transmitter – instead of the internet solution Mix had with its previous provider. The Digicel Business Solution was a Metro-E delivered over Digicel’s WiMAX network, which is a point to point solution that ensures wireless transmission of data, meaning that it would not be reliant on the internet but instead, a direct peer to peer connection that was dedicated to Mix’s service. Digicel Business provided the entire end to end solution.

Weatherhead recalled, “Once the solution was identified, there were no challenges as all the hardware was available immediately and the installation was very easy. I was also amazed and impressed by the quality of service I received. Not only did Digicel Business solve a problem that had plagued my business for months, but the team was able to solve it within 24 hours; now that’s service.”

By switching to Digicel Business, Mix now enjoys a dedicated service which is far more cost effective than its previous option – and what’s more, it benefits from a superior quality of service meaning dead air is a thing of the past and listeners get to turn on and tune in to hear “today’s best music hits”.
