1.                   What is 4G LTE?

  • 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) is a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals.
  • 4G LTE is recognised as Fourth Generation Mobile Technology and is the fastest mobile data connection available in Barbados.
  • 4G LTE allows for larger amounts of data to be transferred at faster speeds. [KP1] Digicel will utilise two bands: Band 17 (700MHz) and Band 2 (1900MHz), meaning any 4G LTE compatible devices that accept these frequencies and bands will be able to access our 4G LTE network.

2.       How is 4G LTE Data useful to me?

·         Provides access to faster upload and download speeds

·         Better experience on Skype and WhatsApp calls

·         Fast and real-time connection

3.       Where is 4G LTE data available?

·         4G LTE coverage is available in areas of Bridgetown with other locations currently being added island wide on a phased basis

·         Island-wide 4G LTE coverage will be available in the near future

4.       What are the benefits of 4G LTE?

Speed:

·         4G LTE service allows for super-fast browsing speeds in comparison to other technologies (e.g. 2G and 3G, HSPA+)

Seamless streaming:

·         With 4G LTE, data is transferred in larger packets at faster speeds; which eliminates buffering when downloading or streaming.

[KP2] [KP3] Control:

·         Digicel’s current data plans have usage notifications that allow customers to keep track of and manage their data usage while utilising 4G LTE.

Productivity:

·         4G LTE easily works with large files from your mobile phone, tablet or laptop due to higher upload and download speeds.

5.       What are the available 4G LTE Plans?

  • For a limited period Digicel customers will be able to enjoy 4G LTE speed with their existing data plans and therefore there are no specific plans required to access 4G LTE data speeds. Customers in areas with 4G LTE coverage will automatically be able to enjoy 4G LTE data on their devices with their existing data plans or at Pay As You Go rates.

6.       Who can access 4G LTE data?

  • All of our new and existing prepaid and post-paid customers using devices compatible with Band 17 (700MHz) and Band 2 (1900MHz).

7.       Do I need to be on a data plan to access 4G LTE data speeds?

  • Customers who do not have an active a data plan can also access 4G LTE data speeds at our Pay As You Go rates when within the 4G LTE coverage areas. We recommend that our customers sign up to a data plan while using 4G LTE services in order to avoid any unplanned expenses at Pay As You Go rates.

8.       Can my handset access 4G LTE data?

  • Only devices compatible with Band 17 (700MHz) and Band 2 (1900MHz) will be able to access 4G LTE services.  Customers with these devices should adjust their data settings to ensure “LTE” is available on their handsets. Because the service is backward compatible, their handsets will automatically revert to 4G in areas where there is no 4G LTE coverage.
    • To adjust data speed settings on your 4G LTE compatible handset: Android OS
      • Settings  Mobile Networks > Network Mode > select “LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect)”
    • Apple iOS
      • Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data > select “LTE”
    • Blackberry OS
      • Settings > Mobile network > Data Services > Network Mode > select “LTE & 4G/ 3G & 2G”

9.       How do I sign up for a 4G LTE data plan?  

·         For a limited period there are no separate data plans for 4G LTE. Customers will have access to LTE speeds using their existing data plans.

·         To continue to access 4G LTE speeds customers are encouraged to sign up for one of Digicel’s existing data plans using the below short codes:

10.       How do I activate a Data Plan?

·      You may activate a data plan by any of the three methods below.

o   UMM Menu

  Customers may dial *246# [send] and follow the prompts.

  Once the customer completes the activation process they will receive an SMS confirming activation.

o   Using the MyDigicel App

  Customers may download the MyDigicel App from PlayStore for their handset. Once the MyDigicel App is launched, the customer will be required to register for the service if this was not completed prior.

  Once logged in, the customer will be required to scroll to the plan option and select the preferred plan to activate.

  Upon successful activation, the customer will receive a confirmation SMS along with a notification message displayed on the MyDigicel App.

o   Using Digicel’s Web page (for dongles and data only devices)

  Customers should enter https://digicelgroup.com/bb in the URL field of their browser.

  Once the Digicel Barbados web page is displayed, under the heading “Plans & Services” select the option to “Buy Plans Online”.  Enter the phone number of the device for which the data plan is required, select the desired plan and the option to “buy now”.

   Register for the service (if a Digicel ID is already created, same may be used to log in here).

  Once registration is complete, the customer will be required to log in and select their preferred plan to activate.

  Once the plan is activated the customer will receive a confirmation SMS along with a notification message displayed on the My Digicel Web page.

To avoid unexpected out-of-plan/bundle charges, customers are advised NOT to browse until they have received a confirmation SMS advising that the Internet bundle has been activated. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

11.       How long does my plan take to be activated?

·         The plans will activate immediately after entering the required USSD codes or completing the activation request via the MyDigicel App or MyDigicel Web. A confirmation message will be sent to indicate the completion of the activation.

12.       Will I need credit on my account to access 4G LTE Data?

·         Customers are required to have credit to be able to activate a data plan or access data at Pay As You Go rates.  

13.       What happens if I exhaust the allotted bundle allowance (MB/GB) of the package purchased, before the plan time ends?

·         If you exceed your allotted data bundle for the selected plan you will receive a prompt to purchase an additional data bundle purchase a new data plan by dialling *246# [send].

·         Once your data bundle is exhausted, you may choose to re-subscribe to the same plan, upgrade to a new plan or select any of the other available data plans.

·         You may dial *246# and select the Data plan of choice or you may renew/upgrade your current plan.

·         You are immediately given a new plan with a full bundle allocation and time on the new plan if a plan re-purchase or upgrade is done. The unused bundle allowance will roll over from the old plan to the new plan.

14.       How do I check my data bundle balance?

·         In order to query your Prepaid data plan balance you are required to either dial a USSD code, or use the MyDigicel App

15.       Will I receive a message to tell me when the bundle is completely used?

·         Yes, you will receive the following text messages on your mobile device:

16.       What rate do I pay if I use my phone as a modem or hotspot with a computer (i.e. Tethering)?

·         Tethering is charged from the available data bundles allotted to your selected data plan. If a data plan is not activated, data consumption will be charged at Pay As You Go rates.

17.       Can I use my Non-GPRS compatible handset to access 4G LTE Data Bundles?

·          Only 4G LTE Band 17 (700MHz) and Band 2 (1900MHz) compatible devices can be used to access 4G LTE speeds.

18.       Can I use a Data Card, USB modem to access Digicel 4G LTE?

·         The device must be 4G LTE Band 17 (700MHz) and Band 2 (1900MHz,) not Broadband/ WIMAX, therefore customers will be able to use a data card or USB modem that uses SIM cards.

·         Activations can be completed by either visiting the Digicel Barbados Website; (http://digicelgroup.com/bb ) , via the MyDigicel App or by placing the SIM in a handset in order to activate the Prepaid data plan

19.   Am I able to use data services when I roam outside of Barbados?

·         Prepaid data roaming is automatically enabled for prepaid customers. Your ability to access 4G LTE data speeds when roaming is dependent on the data capability of the roaming network. Post-paid customers should contact customer care to have roaming enabled prior to departing.

20.   What should I do if I am unable to access 4G LTE Speeds?

·         Verify that 4G LTE coverage is available in your area

·         Confirm that the network settings on your handset are set to LTE

·         Ensure that your handset is 4G LTE capable with Band 17 (700MHz) and Band 2 (1900 MHz)
