“Our alliance with Digicel helps significantly extend the reach of the LIVE UP campaign by allowing young people to access information and resources about HIV/AIDS with the touch of a button,” said Dr. Allyson Leacock, CBMP Executive Director. “Our campaign is about engaging young people to help stem the spread of the disease by “LIVING UP” in their own lives. “We see it as our responsibility at Digicel to share the benefits of mobile technology particularly amongst young people” said Brian Finn, Commercial Director of Digicel Group.“Digicel is pleased to partner with such a dynamic coalition of Caribbean broadcasters to provide potentially life saving information to our customers. It’s an exciting opportunity for our company to make a real difference in the lives of young people, and contribute to AIDS awareness across the region.”
Digicel operations across its 23 markets are also involved in local initiatives to commemorate World’s AIDS Day on December 1st. In Turks and Caicos the mobile operator is hosting a HIV/AIDS Telethon to raise funds to assist the TCI Ministry of Health in providing medication to persons living with HIV/AIDS and to augment prevention education and harm reduction programs.
The Caribbean is the region most affected by HIV/AIDS in this hemisphere, and is second only to sub-Saharan Africa in terms of the impact of the disease. AIDS is a leading cause of death among adults (ages 15-44) in the Caribbean, and 250,000 of the region’s residents are living with HIV or AIDS. Half of those are women, and a third are young people between the ages of 15-24.
